From Flensburg, for municipalities

We are Green Ecolution UG (haftungsbeschränkt) i.G., based in Flensburg. We develop and operate an open platform that turns measurements into decisions and operations, and we started with the irrigation of urban trees.

Story

How a project became a company

It began with a question from the City of Flensburg: how can you tell which urban trees really need water, instead of watering by gut feeling? The city brought this problem to the Smarte Grenzregion.

In 2024, nine students on the Applied Computer Science master's programme at Hochschule Flensburg turned it into a research project, together with the city's Technisches Betriebszentrum. The result was a soil sensor and a platform that shows irrigation demand on a map and calculates the watering route. In user tests with the TBZ, the application achieved an above-average usability score.

Then it moved into practice. In autumn 2025, Green Ecolution received funding from the state programme "Offene Innovation" of DigitalHub.SH, the TBZ uses the platform in its daily work, and in September 2026 the state of Schleswig-Holstein awarded Green Ecolution its Digitalisierungspreis.

To turn the project into a product for many municipalities, we founded Green Ecolution UG (haftungsbeschränkt) i.G..

Open source as a principle

Transparency, independence and reusability are not extras for us, they are the foundation of our work.

Licence

AGPL-3.0-only

Licensed under the AGPL. Funded as part of DigitalHub.SH's "Offene Innovation" ("Open Innovation") state programme.

Sovereignty

Digital sovereignty

No dependency on proprietary platforms. Municipalities retain control over their data and infrastructure. No vendor lock-in.

Community

Reuse & community

Source code and documentation are public on GitHub. Improvements built for one municipality are available to all the others.

Cost efficiency

Cost efficiency

No licence fees for municipalities. Value creation stays in Schleswig-Holstein because development and operation happen regionally.
